"text": "> Okay, but like. How would you stop a person from shooting themselves? \n\nMy sense of dark humor suggests that you can stop a person from shooting themselves by shooting them dead first. Works like a charm. \n\nAssuming you’re looking for a different answer, how else do you think the police are equipped to prevent a person from shooting themselves?\n\n>What if you’re having an episode and aren’t responsive? \n\nThen you likely won’t obey police orders when they arrive, which puts you in danger from the police. Potentially great danger, if your episode involves paranoia and confusion, and you have therefore armed yourself (say with a knife) to protect yourself from potential attackers. \n\nHow do you think a paranoid person, who is not responsive and experiencing a break from reality, will perceive and react to forced police intervention at this time?\n\nWhat do you think the police will do if that person is holding any sort of weapon and refusing to obey orders to put it down?\n\n>Would you get someone trained in mental health services, like a Clinical Psychologist to break into someone’s house to talk to them? \n\nI wouldn’t expect a psychologist to break into a home. If there is need for officer involvement, the officers can break into the house. \n\nAfter the City obtains access, then yes, a mental health professional should be the primary if not only individual taking to them. What would be gained by making an officer the person’s main point of contact?\n\n>I would have a police officer try to subdue them (peacefully, mind you), so they can get on the proper avenues of treatment without harming themselves. \n\nThis person may be paranoid, confused, and potentially doesn’t understand why a bunch of strangers have suddenly broken into his apartment and are brandishing guns. The chance this person will resist is high, because they’re not in touch with reality at that moment and may view themselves as under attack. \n\nWhat makes you think police officers know how to peacefully subdue a person during their potentially violent mental health crisis, and get them into the right treatment?\n\nI’ll remind you of one thing: as a direct result of police intervention, this young man will never pursue *any* avenue of treatment again. We probably agree that this intervention was a very bad one, yes?\n\n>I get all cops being bad and all that jazz, but that’s not a practical solution to a growing problem lol \n\nPlease consider these questions:\n- did the officer response in this situation constitute a practical solution to a problem of mental illness?\n- Did the officer response have ANY positive impact at all here?\n- would the parents prefer that the police had never showed up?\n- would the young man have been better off, if the police had never showed up?\n- would the young man have had a better chance at staying alive, if the police had never showed up?",
