The f-15C (closest spec wise to the f-15A used in that trial) had a payload capacity of 16,000 lb.

The f-15E - 23,000 lb.

The new F-15 ex? It can carry 29,500lb of crap to a disclosed maximum altitude of 60,000 ft, though an unpainted F-15A "the streak eagle" set some time-to-climb records, hitting ~100,000 ft.

So yeah, the physics haven't changed, but we weren't really pushing the eagle all that much with the testing in the 80s, and the modern f-15s are a pretty damn capable.

Also, if you're looking for a laugh, boeing proposed the GSE "global strike eagle" in 2006, suggesting that we could strap a 45 foot long, 3 stage missile to the _top_ of the plane.

So uh, yeah, I'm pretty sure we've got a few ways to take out a satellite if we had to.
