The staking process (as currently implemented; e.g. pre-dTAO) does not involve any risks as you retain control of the transfer functions of your TAO (security risk), and there is no lock period (financial risk).

By not staking, you miss out the TAO emissions you may otherwise receive should you stake.

That being said, using a service like TensorPlex's stTAO would carry some risk as you must trust TensorPlex to keep your TAO holdings secure. Native staking, however, does not carry this risk.
