Not at all, though you should understand how the algorithm works. For that you can find the pseudocode for most algorithms online pretty easily. Even more advanced ones you can find through research papers.
It’s a great exercise though and I had to code many of the popular algorithms from scratch during my masters degree. I’ve done FFNN, logistic regression, PCA, k-means, KNN, SVM, linear regression with OLS. I can dig up some links if you’re interested.
