Mutual funds only trade once a day, at the end of the day, so they are less flexible than ETFs. Also, from my experience, investing into a mutual fund usually also includes a fee that does not exist with purchasing an ETF for the first time. I'm not sure if that is per fund, or if that is unique to my brokerage, but it's a thing I have seen that I have not seen with ETFs. All that to say, if you can get an ETF that tracks an index, it may cost less than getting a Mutual Fund that tracks the same index.
