At a very high level, not speaking about Bittensor specifically, as I would be unqualified to do so, it is true that there is always some risk associated with staking. At the very least, it is more complicated than just holding, and therefore more likely for something to go wrong. Even if that something is just a bug in the code or some loophole or vulnerability nobody has figured out or exploited yet. However, as far as passively earning on your crypto goes, staking is the safest thing out there. Staking is generally safe enough for even the risk averse, and is not likely to result in significant losses. I suspect someone will want to respond to this and point out some aspect of how it works and that there is therefore really no risk. That is all good in theory, but as it is more complicated than just holding, the extra complication still makes it at least slightly more risky than holding. Even just holding a coin has some risk. There could be some attack on the network that results in all the nodes deciding your wallet address doesn't have any coins. It's not likely to happen, but not totally impossible.

So yes, staking, generally speaking with crypto, is safe enough, but nobody can make absolute promises that it is 100% safe.
