New (especially if it’s a new model or has significant rework under the hood) comes with its own risks due to simply not knowing how it’ll perform long term on the road. This is less of an issue with older cars or in the middle of a production run.

Used cars absolutely come with risk, and you have to be conscientious about the condition of them. What I’ve found in my time buying vehicles from the 2000s onwards is they tend to be quite reliable with a little bit of digging.

Yes, it’s ultimately a personal choice and if you have the money or simply don’t want the thought in your mind, new can make sense. Financially though, it is rarely if ever the economical option—which I would argue is relevant for most younger people and many others even as they age.

To me the winning pros of used are having a much smaller or non existent car payment, lower overall purchase price, cheaper insurance, and not having to try to balance depreciation and trading in as many people do. Even if my engine and transmission blew up tomorrow (highly unlikely), I’d still be 10s of thousands under the average cost of a new vehicle.
