I think the point of this article and other people’s comments is that sadly nothing has changed. These people might perceive themselves worse off now, but they were in the same economically perilous position pre-COVID.

I don’t think anyone is arguing the lowest income in America are suddenly doing much better, the issue seems to be Americans are less optimistic about the current situation and the future even though materially they were in the same danger and economic hardship before.
