You don’t want to frame it in that way but policy makers have to think about the real world consequences of their actions. The meat companies that were sued for millions for employing Mexican teenagers pushed to change the law. Leave the law as is and they fire their immigrant employees or don’t hire any more. What happens to those teenagers? Many of them don’t have many options and fall into gang activity.

Obviously the line needs to be drawn somewhere. It’s unacceptable for 12 year olds to work in any capacity in the US even if they are Mexican kids who have already been working for 6 years.

I don’t necessarily trust that the policy makers care more about the teenagers than the business owners/consumer prices. But I don’t think people moralizing about the more lax child labor laws care either as much as they have an automatically anti-corporate attitude. The first question should be how does this change affect the people in purporting to be protecting or helping, important to pay attention to unintended consequences
