Misinformation helps complete the belief system though. People (rightly) like to talk about how Russians fund and support far right organizations is the US and elsewhere (NRA, tea party, etc.); but the also fund and support far left organizations to provide insane quotes that the far right can cherry-pick as "all liberals". Russia has been more effective at co-opting conservative machinery, but that's a coincidence more than an inherent truth. There was a real chance the Russian-supported leftists (in the US, Tulsi Gabbard, Jill Stein, your generic "anti-imperialist" college kid who can't really explain what they mean beyond "decolonize X") became the dominant force in liberal politics.
It's a mistake to think of this as an issue inherent to conservatives, or Russia supporting conservatives because they agree with conservatives. Russia's aim is discord in the West, and they'll support anyone who they think can help cause it. They took over the conservative machine first through a combo of ignorant and willing accomplices, but they're still trying (and having some, but not overwhelming) success to do that to the liberal machine.
