Absolutely the crux of the problem.
People look at pensions as great, but all it did was collectively take some of the money that would've been earned and put it into a managed pension plan. The 401k puts the responsibility back in the employee's hands.
And where I think some of this line of reasoning is going is that a lot of workers are just not responsible enough to plan their retirement savings. There's a wider social contract discussion to be had here, that people who work their whole lives should have something to show for it. I'm even sympathetic to that viewpoint.
But I also don't really see most companies in America shouldering that responsibility well. In whatever way they can reduce that expense and offload the responsibility, at least in this age of business, they absolutely will find a way to do it.
