Yeah, if the US government wants to kill you, you are dead. Your only real hope is to go into hiding and never let anyone know where you are. And even then, a small slip up will result in an ops team showing up in their stealth helicopters. You really need your own military to prevent it, and even then the goal is just to make the benefit too low for the cost. The US can scale up to "turn the entire country to ash" levels of force, so it is never possible to actually prevent them from killing you, it is just possible to prevent it from being worth it.

Assassination is just generally not a fantastic solution to any problems. It tends to create chaos and power vacuums, and those are not in any major economic power's best interest. Assassination is just sort of a fools game. If it becomes a big thing it starts getting hard to keep anyone alive. Humans are soft targets.
