I'm trying to think like a Republican here... why not just let him run, win and then use one of these inevitable convictions to screw him over?
A Trump victory is not a worst-case scenario for the RNC. But I do agree that super-corporatist conservatives aren't too hot on a second Trump term.
The classified documents case (along with all the others) will let them have their cake and eat it too. If Trump wins the election, then Biden is finished and the DNC will have to go on a crash project to determine what its future is going to look like. The monied conservatives don't want another four years of Trump but that's fine- just let his court cases play out, he'll get found guilty of \*something\* and they can remove him from office.
That is- let him run. Stick a real company man on the ticket as his running mate. Let the courts find Trump guilty, remove him from office based on those convictions and you'll control the white house.
You only need a few Republicans in Congress to be in on this. Ain't no Democrat gonna vote against removing Trump from office.
