Reverberations of tech backlash.

I use it daily for my work writing code but here's the thing- if it went away, would it markedly impact me? Honestly, not really. I can still write code.

So what CAN it actually solve? Housing is still expensive. Food is still grown by human hands. It can't do my laundry or make plane tickets any cheaper.

A lot of posts here have commented that AI COULD develop cancer cures. Which is true. I'm super excited about a lot of that- but that has yet to manifest. There's a lot of things that AI MIGHT be able to do that would truly enrich our lives- but the current most prominent use cases are to supplant the human work of artists.

Finally- current AI is really cool, it's remarkable, but it is also not reliable. You cannot set it and forget it- it needs a lot of hand holding so it isn't a drop in replacement for a lot of roles. The problem is that it's good enough a lot of times for spam messages, scammers, and the like, and the low barrier to entry, low cost, infinite scalability makes it ripe for use in that space.

Finally-

The tech industry though never really shook itself out from the crytpo rush. Tech is facing a bit of a reckoning. Tech likes to say it makes the world a better place.

Has it?

Over the last decade, tech has ballooned the real estate markets of a handful of cities, concentrated wealth and destroyed smaller cities. It's created the "gig economy" which offers no stable employment, healthcare, or vacation. Its exacerbated the housing crunch with airbnb and already well to do tech workers further enriching themselves through that platform.

And for what? We've created a generation that is beholden to the anxieties generated by social media, we've increased political polarization, given conspiracy theorists a megaphone, destroyed hundreds of local newspapers, and created countless gigatons of CO2 to mine imaginary currency that is purely a speculative vehicle.

So now tech comes back offering AI as this new fantastic technology that will change the world and you seem bewildered that people aren't welcoming it with open arms- it says to me you need to get out more.
