As someone paying very very close attention to Altria ($MO) and their 45% share in Cronos Group ($CRON) this decision only furthers my suspicion that Altria plans to fully acquire CRONOS in the near future. Both companies have taken actions that will increase their synergies to seamlessly integrate the strengths of the other.

In the last 12 months Cronos has :

Reduced their R&D budget Sold their peacenaturals campus in a lease buyback set to close in June. Closed their fermentation facility in Manitoba and put it up for sale. Focused heavily on profitability while focusing on adult use and keeping the priloduct away from children.

Altria has:

Sold a large position of their shares in alcoholic beverage manufacturing. Done a share buyback of 2.4Bn shares. Have been heavily focused on their smokeless products Continually broadcast steps to focus on adult use and restricting access by children.

Cronos is cleaning up their balance sheet and have altered direction to do so. Altria has been building a war chest and suring up a sufficient amount of capital and shares to acquire a major cannabis company.
