Hey everyone! I am currently a junior in undergrad majoring in marine science and minoring in mathematics. I am looking at grad programs (master's) and I'm starting to get worried...

I've noticed that some programs give preference to physics/engineering/mathematics majors for physical oceanography. In order to be considered for these programs, I am considering delaying my graduation by a year so that I can get a BA in mathematics in addition to my BSc in marine science. However, the required math classes for the BA in math are more abstract than applied math. I'm wondering if it's worth the effort to pursue this option. Any advice or suggestions you folks have would be super helpful and much appreciated!

A bit of background on me that might help with any advice given. I am a nontraditional student (38), I have a 3.8 GPA, only a little bit of lab experience (due to having to work), but just got into an oceanography optics lab that focuses on data analysis using MATLAB. I know some GIS I learned from a college course, and I plan to play around with it over the summer so that I feel comfortable putting it on my CV. Also next semester I will participate in our "semester by the sea" program where I will be spending the semester working in various labs and conducting field work.
