OpenAI’s Superalignment team, led by Ilya and Jan who have now left, seemed to be trying to solve the impossible: save the world from some future threat from AI becoming too powerful or malicious.

But even if they solved it for one company, what about all the other companies?

So that seems like we should get the government involved, but the government has its own interests which are not necessarily “superaligned.”

I’m optimistic about the future nonetheless. But I am curious about exactly what threats Ilya and Jan were trying to address, and how they planned to accomplish that, given that there are many individuals out there who may not adopt their recommendations.
