The guy with the knife was trespassing the unoccupied apartment. His parents wanted him removed from their apartment to get him treatment, the cops told the father that they can take him into custody but they can’t force treatment. If they take him into custody they may have to use force to do so if he refused and the father said understood.

They also asked the father if there were any weapons in the house and the father said no. They weren’t told he was wielding a knife and so they couldn’t prepare for it… unless they’re supposed to assume he has a knife. And if that’s proper protocol then why wouldn’t they also assume he could have other weapons and prepare for that too?

Your whole point is concentrated around downplaying how deadly a stabbing with a knife could truly be and using hindsight to justify your radical stance. The situation sucked for everyone involved and the man needed more help before he even got to his breakdown.
