It makes my heart sink. This last year or so has increasingly shown me that an awful lot of people who said that they were allies and never wanted to be bigoted still are - they just learned to be quiet about groups that aren't acceptable targets. The moment they have someone labeled as an enemy, they're not just happy but *eager* to let loose with hateful vitriol against them that shows how they really feel - whether that's sexism, antisemitism, or in this case homophobia. It makes it clear to me that they aren't actually against these things even if they think they are, they're just moving along with their in-group.

And it sucks to realize that it's not just members of the base who are like that, but our elected officials as well.
