Well, anyone who looks at how drug companies operate, knows that this is true. They retire old but effective drugs and replace them with newly patented drugs, usually just enantiomers, but sometimes whole new drugs in the same class (like statins) that cost ten times as much, but offer no benefit. I have watched it happen from the inside for decades now. Call it use of the patent system and abuse of the patient, or abuse of the patent system, but it is really down to the marketing departments who control physician prescribing behavior.

There is zero reason anyone should be on a statin other than lipitor, other than drug company marketing.

This is why, when people say "trust the experts," I just shudder. Trust no one.
