Inflations effects don't happen immediately. There was massive inflation right before this run-up. 3 year returns adjusted for the 17% inflation bring VOO to a nice -6%.
The extra money that got sloshed into the economy is probably correlated with the record stock levels. Since the dollar devalued, it makes sense that it would cost more dollars to purchase the same assets. It doesn't seem that complicated, although I'm sure there's a fuck load of nuance im missing.
