Content Data

This page contains data entry 44858 from the Axioma AXP content repository. The structured data below represents the complete record for this entry.

My maternal grandparents were well-off, and grandma never worked after she got married.

My paternal grandparents were working-class. Grandpa would come home from work to watch 5 kids while grandma would serve at restaurants/banquet halls in the evenings. About 1/4 of married women in the US worked in the 1950s, and about 1/3 of married women in the 1960s, so it wasn’t that rare. Grandma definitely wasn’t the breadwinner, but her earnings helped them move to a safe suburb to raise kids and then live fairly well in retirement.
