This is interesting to observe and like you, I am also always wondering about such behavior a lot as it does not make any logical sense. This happens with a lot of things, not only AI. I personally know a whole bunch of people who have not even set a single foot into this territory but have a strong opinion. It is because they heard something about it, somewhere, be it in media or in society.

So their whole opinion is based on some vague information about it and not on real knowledge. Maybe it is some normal, psychological pattern that we as humans have to quickly judge and criticize right away before learning a bit more. I mean, I bet I do stuff like this too that I am unaware of.

These people seem to be unable to build a bridge between vague info and profound knowledge. I know a person close to me, that is always criticizing every topic that has something to do with AI. Got them to try ChatGPT once and even after seeing what it can do, what knowledge it can provide they were like "Nah,... I don't trust it." Told them, they should know their tools to understand, but this didn't help.

Some days later, Microsoft implemented Co-Pilot into Bing and this person is now actively using it on a daily basis. I explained a lot of times that this is in fact a Microsoft version of ChatGPT, but they just ignored me. My note to self was: these people need it easy. One click too much and they are in defense mode and block themselves off of gaining knowledge. But when the chat interface is reachable with opening the Edge browser, it is all good.
