Dow is pretty old and busted. S&P500 is a better gauge for the economy, but the Dow I guess has it's use in that it's more sector equal and gives you an idea of how the largest in each sectors are doing.
S&P500 meanwhile is a better gauge of the economy as a whole but might suffer from things like the cap weighting, economic/technological shifts like how it's been skewed towards megacap tech the last few years, and what not.
What Dow index really should do is update their criteria and setups. Like 5/30 constituents are in IT: Apple, Cisco, IBM ,MSFT, and Salesforce. But Google and Facebook aren't in the Dow. Meanwhile, I understand keeping INTC due to it's historical CPU sales but NVDA and AMD are more relevant.
