Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK that arms all of its officers.

Between 2010 and 2019, there have been 7 instances where a PSNI officer discharged their firearm. NI has a population of 1.9m, and assuming that 100% of those discharges resulted in a dead suspect, that makes for 1 death per 271,428 people.

The US has about 1000 police shootings a year. That’s 9000 over the same time frame as the PSNI figures, with a population of 333.3m that makes for 1 shooting per 37,033 people. Or seven times more.

Ok, so 7 times more is bad, but not *that* bad, right? Sure, if you discount the fact that NI had an actual terrorist insurgency until fairly recently, and that many of the organisations involved pivoted to armed organised crime. If you look at England and Wales, it goes to 19 deaths over that time period for a population of 60.2m, or 1 death per 3.1 million people. If the US had those figures, there’d have been 107 shootings, not 9000. That’s 85 times more shootings than there should be.

I think that makes it clear that US police are way too trigger happy.
