I've never used prebuilt one, but see if you can split population into separate species which protects multiple types of mutated genomes to survive simultaneously and add some cross-species breeding. It's definitely far easier to find the right solution if a arbitrary local "best" doesn't drive all other mutations extinct, hence why NEAT paper introduced concept of species.
