Most people are ill-informed and get their information from scifi and ludicrously excitable and scaremongering journalists.

Its also the case that businesses and even the tech leaders don't help - Their remit is the shareholder, so they will use people's misunderstanding and fear to take a swipe at their competition as well as to try to inflate their own products standing.

When radiation was first in the public consciousness and before it was associated with bombs and fall out - 'Radiation' was used to enhance a products and make them seem modern, so the news papers had adverts for 'Radiation' in makeup, in food, in medicine and all sorts of things. In the same way that AI has been stacked onto every IT product for the last twenty years.

Then the scifi Terminator perception of AI leveraged a human fear of our being attacked by some malicious force.

There is very little common sense from any quarter that would quite reasonably point out that:

1) We don't really have AI - We have artificial learning. What is being presented as AI whether it's in a car, in an antivirus product or ChatGPT - is the result of giving a mass of data to a program and getting it to learn how to produce a pleasing outcome.

2) AI has currently promoted has no innate desire. The AIs portrayed in terminator wanted to eradicate humans, wanted to take control, wants to protect itself. These are all human and animal emotions. Those desires are the outcome millions of years of evolution not of programming. AI doesnt desire anything and doesn't care if it's on or off, and it can't suddenly gain that desire.

So the fear and scaremongering is the primary reason. The legitimate fear is that not only will it take jobs but that it might even take jobs that we enjoy or considered human exclusive such as art, poetry, music.
