Okay first of all. This is wrong on so many levels. Unless I missed something, the clinician never stated they feared for their lives. They only stated that their clinical intervention would not de escalate the situation. The article also says they only tried for 2.5 minutes, and that they didn’t release any footage or anything like that. So you don’t really know what happened. From personal experience, 2.5 minutes probably isn’t really enough to de escalate much of anything, if the dude is having some kind of mental breakdown.

A police officers job is to protect and serve the community. Not to go home to their family. If their job was to go home to their family, they shouldn’t have signed on to be a police officer. This particular officer has also shot someone else for having a replica gun (as per the article), but was found to have done it in self defense. Clearly, the officer has a ‘shoot first policy’….so….idk…maybe don’t send that officer to a scene involving a mentally ill person with a weapon?

This entire situation was handled poorly from the start, I’d say.
