I wish it were the case that tasers were more effective, but the reality is that [tasers fail 40% of the time](https://www.nhregister.com/news/article/Tasers-fail-more-often-than-they-work-with-fatal-15002785.php). He was approaching them with the knife, if they used a taser there's a 40% chance he would've gotten a few stabs in and just a single stab in the right place can be fatal even with immediate medical attention. We like to think as knives as less deadly weapons but if they get a stab in they can be more deadly than bullets. If you wait until he's on top of the guy and you wait to shoot the guy then, bullets are liable to travel through him into an officer and even if one is shot a few times they can easily get a few stabs in before you keel over.

I do think there are other approaches they could've taken, but "just use a taser" isn't that simple. They could've shut and jammed the door and continued a negotiation, sent in someone with riot armor to talk him down. In Japan they wrap knife-wielding assailants with a giant stab-proof rug. In the UK they're trained in hand-to-hand combat to fight off knife-wielding suspects with batons.
