Companies are taking individual artist's work without their consent, training models from them, and outcompeting and profiting from the artist's work, all the while never having to credit or pay the artist for the work that contributed to the AI's output. It's not about the use of the technology itself, but the fact that the models companies are using are trained from individual artists without payment or consent. Not to mention, the fact that AI tech bros seem to be cheering on this purposeful theft of intellectual property, calling everyone that has a problem with this a "luddite", completely ignoring the fact that companies CAN make models trained off of data that they own and isn't copyrighted, but choose not to, and thus are selling individual artist's own work without credit or compensation. Why would a company hire an artist when they could instead train an AI without credit, consent, or compensation for the real work the artist actually did for the company. Would it be okay for disney to screw over artists like this? What makes it okay for a smaller companies or individuals to screw over artists like this? And before someone comments that AI learns the same way humans are inspired and should thus be given the same legal protections, the only thing that will do is allow large companies to have even more leverage over the artists that are actually doing the work contributing to their product. Companies shouldn't be allowed to generate thousands of copies of an individual artist's style and have copyright on all of them, thus pushing the artist out of their own niche. It's a very cool technology, but it WILL be abused to its fullest extent by companies that have no care for the rights of actual people, and instead see those as a roadblock in the way of a pile of free cash.
