You can have fractional reserve commodity-backed currency, so due to the multiplier, we can have far more such currency than reserves. So it's no more "goofy" than fiat. And if such currencies weren't effectively banned (e.g., cap gains tax, not usable in contracts, can't be used to pay tax), then competition among them would provide discipline.
