Cost of living is definitely the crux. The US is experiencing the worst income to home price ratio, possibly in all its history.
I think most people wouldn't mind paying a few extra for Netflix, gas, utilities, groceries, etc.....*IF* they were able to afford whatever home was within their budget, especially as they pay off student debt.
But such a thing is not possible. And the massive spending that is occurring and the political posturing by this administration doesn't really address this, whatsoever (the answers being more akin to an automated machine or something).
You're looking at people being locked in with this current lifestyle for an entire decade or so. It's one thing to deal with a Great Recession for a few years. It'll be another to deal with this mixed bag situation for an extended time period, with little to no social fabric holding people together in the meantime.
Quiet mass layoffs, exodus from major cities/West Coast states, decline in white collar positions, poor credit scores, media gaslighting (possibly attacking when their guy isn't in) and culture wars resulting in demoralization of society, etc.
This situation isn't as bad as the Great Recession on paper but it's something entirely different that is unhealthy and incongruent to strong production and growth.
