In addition to the other excellent points already made, I want to add that you shouldn't let "pay the minimum tax possible" be the goal that dominates your financial life. Would you take a pay cut just so you could pay less in taxes? If you want to save aggressively for a comfy retirement, don't be afraid of the tax bracket at the end. Being in a high tax bracket at the end just means you accumulated a lot of wealth. I'm not saying that you shouldn't practice some diligent tax avoidance (NOT evasion), just that often times our fear of taxes can actually hinder progress towards our goals.
A 457(b) provides an avenue for additional tax advantaged (but not completely tax free) investing space you can use. If you aren't meeting your desired savings rate with your available 401k and IRA accounts, then why not also invest using the 457b? It beats taxable brokerage, right?
