Context: 23M with 1 YoE as a DE/DS in healthcare, 1 YoE internships & research.

I love tickling my brain with interesting problems across software and data, but lately, I’ve been feeling that it’s basically impossible for me to get ahead of my peers in this market. Any position I want (DS, DE, DA, etc.) will almost certainly be filled by someone with far more YoE who’s been laid off, and there’s not much I can do to materially stand out other than pitching myself as a junior with a zeal for self-improvement. There is one company near me I’ve been interested in who’s doing some cool stuff with liquid sensors and realtime ML (sounds fascinating!) But, should I spend a couple months’ time after work creating an impressive and relevant realtime ML project to showcase, and when that’s done, keep coming up with ever-better projects? I’m even taking GA Tech’s online MS in CS this fall. Or, should I buy a cheap camera to take pictures of squirrels, do standup, travel, etc., and just enjoy my early 20s? How do I even get my mind out of constantly pursuing a better role?
