I've reported a group of students using chat-GPT in a project report before. It was fairly obvious.

The structure of the paragraphs. Some of the words used were strange and replicable. Some sentences were also quite broad. They then admitted its use.

I'm not the instructor. If I was the instructor I wouldn't care much, you're just never going to learn how to write a good paper without doing it yourself anyways. The best part of this was the paper wasn't of good quality to begin with. Even if I somehow didn't notice they'd of received a C at best.

I should probably mention this isn't an English essay, it's more intended to be a paper from work that could possibly lead to a publication; it's really bad for this use case. Chat-GPT might be better for broader essay writing.

I've also had a group member in a similar type of project use GPT-4 with plugins. I found out since the references were nonsensical with the writing. It was never something that a cited article actually implied. Also, if I recall, some references weren't even real and it appeared as if the author was padding references. Core information is often broad. It looked good at first glance but it was actually really bad upon looking further (as you'd expect).

If you do well at hiding it then you won't get caught. Up to you if you value the skills learned and behavioural development from doing the work yourself. You are always taking a risk though.
