My county sheriff has a mental health response team that goes with specially trained social workers and paramedics.

Even before then, a mentally ill man was Naruto running around the park, screaming for someone to come fight him because he wanted to die. He was repeatedly screaming to come kill him. I called 911, because I thought he was actually going to kill himself or hurt someone else. He had his hands on the edge of his hoodie, arms straight out back and was sprinting and screaming for someone to kill him. I could see him from my house.

As I was describing this, he took a running, flying leap out from behind a bush and tried to run in front of a car and instead hit the side and rolled off. I told them, and they thought he got hit by a car. No, dispatch. He hit the side of the car and rolled off and is now Naruto-style sprinting through traffic. (I didn't actually mention his anime running. Just his running in general.)

Three deputies rolled up, and two city cops. They cornered him on my lawn and the neighbor's lawn, with nowhere to run. He'd have to sprint through a circle of deputies and the neighboring city's PD who showed up to help.

The cops sat there and only one talked. The deputy was just very calm and explaining that people heard him saying he wanted to hurt himself and was jumping in traffic. Guy admitted he was doing that. The deputy just kept explaining that because he was saying he was going to hurt himself, he had to take the guy to county health because nobody wanted him to hurt himself. Guy paced on my lawn for roughly half an hour. The other police and deputies were silent. He kept cussing going fuck, man, fuck. Shit. Fuck, am I going to jail? Deputy explained no, he's not taking him to jail. Just the hospital. He needed to calm down and let the deputy search him and make sure he didn't have any weapons.

He finally accepted he had to go to the hospital and wasn't negotiating his way out to run in traffic or sprint around a park while screaming for someone to come fight and kill him. He laid down on my lawn, put his hands behind his back and let the deputy cuff and search him. And willingly got in the SUV. The deputy even explained he was putting his hand on the young man's head when he got in so he wouldn't hit his head on the car. Asked if he was hurt from running into the car he rolled off of.

Left with him a bit later.

They just let him pace and talk until he calmed down and treated him with some humanity and respect despite him clearly having a severe mental health crisis. I watched them from inside my house. They treated him like a person who needed help and not an enemy combatant and got him into a car after he agreed to go with them quietly.

Other cops left after just making sure the guy couldn't run off.

There are absolutely ways to train police to treat mental health crises like a health problem and not a crime in progress. Have one person talk, and don't get physical unless they attack someone. He wanted to pace and eventually gave up. They didn't just get mad at him and Taser and beat him for taking too long to calm down.

He didn't get hurt. It was a good outcome. He didn't get killed or beaten. He hopefully received mental healthcare and is doing better, now.

They're choosing to not train, or ignore the training and use violence, in many cases. Other outcomes are possible.
