Hello fellow Oceanographers! I am a final year undergraduate student currently completing a senior thesis studying the movement of a certain species of Jellyfish off the coast of Florida. I am trying to build a circulation model using Parcels\["[https://oceanparcels.org](https://oceanparcels.org)"\] and currently, I am using real current data from the GlobCurrent repository. When I visualize my data, however, I see something that I would not anticipate. There are strong eastward currents right off the coast of Florida where I would expect northward currents to be (as part of the Gulf Stream). You can see what I am talking about visualized in the blue vectors in the attached image. I have looked at two different years and these strong eastward currents seem present essentially all day every day for the whole year. In all the research I have done, it seems as though there should be a strong, thin northward current where those eastward currents are instead. This anomaly is really messing up my simulation. So my question is: Are these vectors depicting a real oceanographic phenomenon that one would expect in that area? Or is there some error with the data? Are there any other explanations? GlobCurrent is very widely accepted as a great source for this kind of data, so I am very confused as to what is going on.
