Eh, I'm not really buying it. Even if you blindly accept that Elon is a massive asset to Tesla, he does seem to put off lots of top talent. As the number of high-profile exits continues at a decent clip, that's stronger and stronger evidence that Elon is to blame. Add in the brand damage done with the Twitter purchase, anti-woke crusade with a hint of racism and anti-semitism, and you got some negatives piled up, even if Elon Musk's leadership is great for Tesla. However, that's not necessarily the case.

It is incontrovertible that Tesla made some strategic errors that are directly attributable to Musk's leadership. Overpromising and under-delivering FSD has been generally fine for the stock price in the short term, but it isn't clear that Tesla's approach will lead to a L4 self-driving system. Perhaps, in a year or two, Tesla decides to use higher-quality cameras, change their location or adds additional sensors. If this happens, Tesla would be WAY behind the competition. Perhaps, Tesla figures out self-driving with just the cameras. By that time, it would be nearly guaranteed that the competition is operational with four to eight person vans with expensive sensors, since it is likely much easier to accomplish L4 with more sensors than less, would it even be cost-competitive for an individual owner to operate a RoboTaxi service? A large fleet of electric vans could operate with insane efficiency. At $250k and nearly full capacity in usage, an 8 person autonomous van would be $30k/person upfront, cheaper than a M3 and loads cheaper to operate when costs are divided by 8. They will likely be less than 30k/person honestly. Main point is that Tesla's strategy to achieve self-driving is kinda like hitting a 65 yard field goal with some wind. With some mapping and expensive hardware, other companies have already kinda figured out how to do self-driving. In 5 years, I imagine self-driving taxis will be common in the highest revenue areas, making Tesla's entry into the market significantly less exciting.

As a first-mover in the self-driving space, Elon really invested a lot of money in stuff that ultimately went nowhere, namely FSD versions 1 through 11.
