Because as they've seen proto-AGIs, it's more clear that not only is it possible, but also that it in no way is actually sentient.

15 years ago, people generally thought of AGI as something that would be agentic and learn that way - like a fast thinking human.  Not something where you simply fed their Internet into it, through on some reinforcement, and boom - you have your AGI with no sentience (background thinking) whatsoever.
