Yeah, just sort of... leaving the wrong fire exit door open by accident is enough to cause them all sorts of issues for a while. Doubly so if there's a bunch of smoke in the air because there's a war on. I think people underestimate just how insane the work they do is. Absolutely at the limits of what's possible for humans to do, if everything is exactly 100% right. If things are going 99.99% right, it's a disaster for them.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the "kill switch" is actually something that sounds super mundane like "turn the primary oscillator speed setting from 55 to 60" and the machine sort of falls apart as soon as one setting is out of spec.
