I don't think that's true. American support for the War on Terror became very unpopular very quickly. The only reason it lasted so long was because the reality of war wasn't in their face every night on the nightly news, like the Vietnam War was. It wasn't affecting their lives like the Vietnam War did either.

Bush Jr. Wanted to go in that region to spread democracy, it was a purely interventionist war based on misinformation. Believe it or not despite being an empire the American people don't want to be an empire. We don't want to pay for it with our money, lives, and loss of freedoms.

If you had people interviewing soldiers during firefights and showing the carnage and civilian deaths like we had during Vietnam then I think you'd see a very similar reaction by the public.

But it's hard to hold people accountable and enact change when you're kept ignorant because as Bush Jr repeatedly said it would help the enemy if we the electorate knew more about what our military was actually doing. Pushing that same fear button that Israel is currently using to justify their War on Terror.
