And I never was talking about practicality. We all give up our privacy for the sake of convenience and practicality. I was just highlighting that it is possible to not use these products and still exist as a human. Whether it’s enjoyable or not really depends on your values, but I know plenty of people who are semi off grid or don’t use the plethora of products out there.

As for why they keep the data, well that’s because that’s what you paid to use the product. It is sketchy and I do think there needs to be regulations around how companies can create profiles of people who don’t use their app, but are just in close proximity to someone that does. But they don’t delete it because you “paid” for the service and agreed that they can use it for whatever they want.

I’m not a lawyer so I don’t know enough how much practicality plays into whether or not a contract is valid. I’m just highlighting that we willingly give up this data to companies and what they are doing is mostly legal. GDPR tried to get some reigns on it by being more transparent, but so many powerful people benefit from this capitalist surveillance that I don’t see a US GDPR being passed ever.

I work in tech and work with user data and device data. It’s mind blowing how much information people willingly give up.
