I REGISTER to vote. this gives me a tokenized ID with a private key nobody else has. i do this in a PRIVATE, TRUSTED environment. like literally I go the Social Security office to a show my ID and verify it. They hand me a verification token that is useless until I go to a custom kiosk where I generate my private key using the token they just gave me. That's not even a blockchain, this is just a database, but it doesn't collect personally identifiable information - it only ensures that there is one token A per one token B and no duplicates.

And yes, since it is private and trusted, it means you could have a malicious government employee leak the data and track down who voted what. That is correct and could be solved in the same way it is solved today at the IRS, through audit checks and access control schemes. Not perfect but workable, because the effort to do this- tracking single identifiers across several independent layers of data exchanges- becomes extremely costly very fast. By the time you've successfully matched voter IDs with actual submitted votes, someone in between all of this will notice, cause a huge stink, and the damage will be in the thousands of compromised votes at one district or two, not a national disaster. Yes it's not perfect but pretty good. Just like the IRS.

2. I go vote on a trustless, open source audited L1, using my new private key that records my vote in the blockchain, and get a receipt. The blockchain encodes the validity of my key, the choice I made, and that's it.

3. a third party aggregates all the votes on the L1 by the federal deadline, and submits a report to a private auditing firm, which by the way, is mandated to publish the source data and their report on a public-access platform for the world to see and audit again if anyone chooses. By doing a double validation like this, you dramatically reduce the chances of malicious agents being able to pull a heist, because doing it once is hard but doing it twice, at the same time, without one of them noticing, is near impossible.

4. the government certifies the audited report as the official result and moves on. If anyone complains that there were shenanigans, feel free to fund an effort to re-validate.
