Roe v wade was a court opinion not a law that allowed abortion access up to fetal viability(record premature birth survival is 22 weeks). Politicians have known for years that it was destined to get overturned. When it got overturned abortion legislation got booted back to the states which in turn gives voters more power over the legal extent of abortion access(taxpayer dollars are involved). Democrats have had multiple opportunities to codify abortion into federal law and they have not done so. They could even get a lot of Republicans onboard if they would agree on setting the # of weeks a non emergency abortion can be performed at.
