There alternative narrative is that Cohen took it upon himself to 'deal with' the problem of a porn star who fabricated a sex scandal with a prominent political figure on the eve of an election. They will argue that Cohen is a fraud, was solely responsible for negotiating the payout, did it with his own money, and then misled his client into unknowingly paying for that settlement by overbilling him for legal services.

They can't (effectively) deny that payments were made. The prosecutor established a paper trail about the money. But in order to convict, the prosecution has to prove knowledge and intent beyond a reasonable doubt and that was established via testimony. They can absolutely argue their alternative explanation and pound the table that Cohen's history of lying establishes reasonable doubt that he is being truthful with his version of events. Successfully convincing the jury that Cohen is a compulsive liar who wants revenge on Trump could absolutely be enough to create reasonable doubt.

I don't think it will be enough and I think Trump's best chance at acquittal or a hung jury came from picking the right jurors who either have a political agenda or are able to get completely hung up on irrelevant shit to the point that they find their own reasonable doubt from something nonsensical. But they don't need to offer any alternative explanation besides 'this known liar who wants revenge on our client is telling a bullshit story to shift guilt after he got caught doing this illegal thing.'
