What is bitcoin?

Is it a currency? Then I expect it to have stability, and be useful as a medium of exchange. The extreme volatility of crypto, and the fact that I don’t know anyone who has bought something with bitcoin and I don’t know anyone who knows anyone who has, so it’s not a currency, at least not a useful one. And even if it were currencies aren’t investments, I don’t have a portion of my portfolio in Euro as a hedge against the dollar, it wouldn’t make sense.

Okay, so then should it be part of the cash(or bond) portion of my portfolio? Well it doesn’t pay regular interest, or have a stabilizing effect on a portfolio, so it’s inappropriate here.

We’re left with comparing it to a stock, ownership in an actual company, my investment grows with the measurable growth of the companies I invest in. Bitcoin has no intrinsic value, so its price as a stock would be, and will forever be, $0, so it’s not comparable to a stock.

It’s not a currency, it’s not cash, it doesn’t have intrinsic value, it’s 100% pure speculation. It is the greater fools theory put into practice for the 21st century, the hope that some other sucker will buy it for more than I bought it. As such, it has no place in my portfolio, nor should it have a place in yours.
