There are many crypto-linked ETFs on the market today: spot bitcoin ETFs, bitcoin futures ETFs, Ethereum futures ETFs, ETFs that combine bitcoin and Ethereum futures, bitcoin covered-call ETFs, and crypto equity ETFs.

There are reasons to be optimistic about spot Ethereum ETFs, too. We have truly entered the ETF era of crypto. In the world of crypto assets, there is a big gap between Bitcoin/Ethereum and other assets like Solana, XRP, Avalanche, etc. The gap is that the CME—a nationally regulated futures market—trades futures contracts linked to Bitcoin and Ethereum. The existence of this regulated futures market supports the listing of spot crypto asset ETFs because it provides a regulated venue to surveil and monitor the crypto market. It may take new legislation or regulation to move beyond spot Bitcoin and spot Ethereum ETFs in the U.S. It could also involve the SEC approving a new approach that doesn’t require a regulated futures market taking root first.
