Good point. Not that there's only one way to look at it, but if the inferior force splits in three detachments and disperses, if the superior force splits into two, they lose contact with one of the detachments, creating a prime opportunity for the untracked unit to outflank them and attack them by surprise, which is a great equalizer.

I'm assuming that the larger force would want to leverage their numbers advantage and force them to fight, hence they'd pursue the smaller force. Plus, you gotta keep in mind the time period in question. If it's after the advent of radio comms and aerial surveillance, the larger force could just radio each other if they split in three but lost contact with one of the enemy detachments, so defeat in detail is far less of a possibility than it was when communications travelled at the speed of horse.
