In the modern era, the results of been extremely limited, proving to be more of propaganda value then tangible military value.
Much is written on Russian General Vlasov and the Russian Liberation Army, but it's military effectiveness was never that great. Used mostly for internal security on the Eastern Front, they were reliable enough until the tide turned against Germany and they began deserting in large numbers. Transferred to the Western Front, they would surrender *en masse* to the Western Allies until it became common knowledge that they would be repatriated to the USSR.
In ancient history, the Roman's were very successful for hundreds of years recruiting soldiers from recently defeated enemies. Formed into *auxilia* units during the *Principate*, and recruited directly into the Roman Legions during the *Dominate.* Many contemporary writers often commented that the most valuable resources Rome gained from treaties with defeated barbarians (i.e. Goths) was the annual troop levy that they would need to provide.
