Hello! I have gotten into two REU programs for the summer so far. One of the labs is brand new. I would be choosing between projects that use gas chromatography to measure salt marsh diel water fluctuations and how they affect carbon chemistry, linking organic matter quality with CO2, CH4, and N2O production, and using random forest models to analyze large data sets.
At the other lab, I would be helping build groundwater models with Fortran and Matlab to assess coastal groundwater quality after a large fire that destroyed a village. This project is in the realm of hydrogeology as opposed to oceanography.
I am interested in researching ocean chemistry of coastal ecosystems, and how anthropogenic factors affect them.
The reason I was drawn to the second project, despite being further from my research interests than the first, is because I would like to develop computational skills to complement field work. I am also a part of an ethnic community with close ties to the ethnic community that was affected by this fire, and have been involved in leadership and advocacy for the umbrella community that encompasses both of our groups, so I am also culturally motivated to pursue this project.
If I pursue the hydrogeology project, would I be able to apply the skills I learn, such as groundwater modeling, to future research in oceanography? I haven't read into hydrogeology much and am unsure as to how the skills I learn from it can transfer to my future research interests. I hope this post is somewhat comprehensible, and I welcome all advice.
